#1 Hey folks, so this will be my official build thread. I'm brand new to motorcycles, this being my first bike I've ever owned and recently this year learnt how to ride. I have zero mechanical knowledge besides basic car maintenance; I'm learning as I go so bear with me when I ask lots of questions.

The XS650 quickly earned a reputation for performance, with Kenny Roberts sliding around dirt ovals on his XS-based flat tracker, and it proved itself affordable and reliable for regular riders, too. Today, the XS650 stands as one of the best vintage Japanese motorcycles of the era, and a ready donor for all kinds of custom builds.

The idea was dreamt up after the donor for the project, a 1980 Yamaha XS650 Special, was acquired from a friend. The XS had been sitting neglected but Hoshi-san saw potential in the bike thanks to a recently rebuilt engine. To ensure it had enough grunt for the race track Hoshi-san kicked things off with a few performance upgrades.

For his latest project, Andy's moved away from the cafe racer aesthetic and built a street-ready Yamaha XS650 Scrambler. Here's how this bike came together in Andy's own words…. "While I was building the CB750 four and the CB900 Bol d'Or my girlfriend at that time started to get interested in old school custom motorcycles too.

The bike is now rolling on 18" Borrani rims laced to the original rear drum hub and a quad leading shoe 230mm Robinson front drum, completed with 38mm Ceriani forks and custom yokes. But there's than meets the eye with the front drum — it's actually a hydraulic setup!

For the install you'll need your wrenches or a socket set, a grinder or something for cutting the old brake and gear pedal, a drill press, some Loctite and a set of Allen keys. Here's the installation process broken down in to steps: Start by loosely assembling the rear sets.

The old XS650s are pretty easy to find, the problem is many have been hacked and chopped into some unfortunate mess, not a problem if you only want the engine but if you're looking to do what this guy did, you'll want a nicer one to start with.
